DC DMV Indefinitely Suspends Proposed Driver Education Regulations

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) is indefinitely suspending the driver education requirement for residents who are first time drivers regardless of their age.

In 2014, DC DMV drafted regulations that would have required all first time drivers to pass a driver education course administered by a private vendor. Implementation was scheduled to begin on May 1, 2016; however, the agency will further review the impact of such a requirement on residents.

New drivers will still be required to have a valid DC DMV learner permit. For more information on obtaining a driver license, visit: http://dmv.dc.gov/service/driver-services

Additional DC DMV Background:

When seeking in-person services at a DC DMV location, DC DMV encourages customers to plan ahead and “Know Before You Go” to successfully complete the transaction in one visit; therefore, it is necessary to have all of the required documents at the time of service.

Also, DC DMV offers more than 50 services online at dmv.dc.gov, enabling customers to “skip the in-person trip.” They include:

· Renew vehicle registration (can only be done online or by mail; no in-person visit)

· Renew driver license

· Obtain duplicate driver license

· Renew identification card

· Surrender tags

· Obtain driver record

· Pay tickets

With any online or in-person transaction in which DC DMV collects money, customers now have the option to make a donation to the DonateLifeDC organ donor registry to support organ and tissue donation for people located in the Washington, DC community.
