DC Crime Summary – April 30th – May 5th

MPD Sergeant Buddy Smallwood passed away this past weekend. He served as an Officer in MPD for 48 years. The DC Police Union’s thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Smallwood’s family and friends during this difficult time. • Three men were killed this past week in the District. Leo Hackett, 30, was shot and killed Saturday morning in the Carver/Langston neighborhood, and Wilbert Whitaker, 67, was arrested in connection with the case. • Josiah Jones, 21, was identified as the man who was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Petworth neighborhood. Anyone who has information related to the case should contact the authorities at 202-727-9099. • Anthony Payne, 40, was identified as the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a hijacked Metrobus. The suspect, 30-year-old Keith James Loving, was allegedly high on synthetic marijuana and PCP at the time of the incident. • DC Police are investigating a report of a man seen taking a photo of kids at a playground near the National Presbyterian School. The male suspect is about 6’0” tall, and he is in his late 20s to early 30s.

WUSA9: Long serving DC police officer Buddy Smallwood dies “One of the longest-serving officers in the Metropolitan Police Department has died. Sergeant Buddy Smallwood started at the 14th precinct on July 20, 1964 which was located in the area covered by today’s Sixth District. He was promoted to sergeant in 1972 and assigned to the Fifth District.”

NBC Washington: Fallen Police Officers’ Names Added to Memorials “Two Maryland police officers recently killed in the line of duty were honored Wednesday with the additions of their names to memorials. Montgomery County Police Officer Noah Leotta’s name was added Wednesday morning to the Public Safety Memorial on Edison Park Drive in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The names of 20 fallen heroes were read aloud and a bell tolled as family members lit candles in their memory.”

WJLA: Man gets 10 years for ‘execution’ of stepfather, an MPD detective, over yard work dispute “Antwan James was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for the 2013 killing of his stepfather, D.C. police detective Joseph Newell. A jury found James guilty of involuntary manslaughter in September 2015, but acquitted him of first- and second-degree murder, said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.”

Washington Post: Police describe hijacking of D.C. Metrobus that led to deadly collision “A passenger on a Metrobus attacked the driver, then hijacked the vehicle in Northeast Washington on Tuesday morning, continuing for several blocks until he careered into a gas station and fatally struck a pedestrian, police said.”

Washington Post: Man, 67, charged in slaying of man, 30, in Northeast Washington “A 30-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday in Northeast Washington, and a 67-year-old man was arrested and charged in the death, D.C. police said. Police said that Leo Hackett was killed in the 800 block of 21st Street NE and that Wilbert Whitaker was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.”

Washington Post: Man, 21, shot and killed in Northwest Washington “A 21-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Northwest Washington. The incident happened just before 4 p.m. in the 4500 block of Illinois Avenue NW. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The man was later identified by police as Josiah Jones of Northwest.”

Washington Post: Juvenile stabbed at Union Station; police questioning person “A male juvenile was stabbed Thursday afternoon at Union Station, according to D.C. police. It was not immediately clear whether the stabbing occurred outside or inside the station.”

Washington Post: D.C. police investigating suspicious men around children, one at playground “D.C. police are investigating two instances of men watching children in Northwest Washington, including one man seen taking pictures of youths near a playground, according to authorities. Police Cmdr. Melvin Gresham of the 2nd District station, which includes Chevy Chase, Georgetown, Cleveland Park and Foggy Bottom, said officers have increased patrols around schools and playgrounds.”

WUSA9: MISSING: 12-year-old girl “Police need your help locating a missing 12-year-old girl from the District. Aniya Pettus was last seen in the 900 block of 3rd Place around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. She is being described as a black female, 5-feet tall, weighing 85 pounds with brown eyes and black hair in a ponytail.”

NBC Washington: CSX: Three Different Chemicals Leak After Train Derailment in DC “A CSX freight train carrying hazardous material derailed near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station early Sunday, sending 14 cars off the tracks and spilling hazardous material from three of them, according to CSX.”

NBC Washington: DC Residents Get Rebates for Installing Security Cameras “A new program in D.C. helps pay for residents and business owners to buy surveillance cameras — if they register them with the District to help catch criminals. More than 200 people have applied for rebates of as much as $750 to install cameras outdoors, with an agreement that D.C. police can access them if needed.”
