This is an important message from the District of Columbia AlertDC system.

DHS reports the heat emergency has been activated. According to NWS, the current temperature is 93 degrees and the HEAT INDEX is 95 degrees. Today will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny with a high near 94. West wind around 8 mph. Tonight, partly cloudy with a low around 74. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Residents and visitors in the District can keep cool by staying in shade or air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. When the temperature or heat index reaches 95, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions against the heat. If they do not live in an air-conditioned building, they may take refuge at a District recreation facility, senior center or other air-conditioned building. More information, and locations, can be found at hsema.dc.gov or by calling 311.
