DC Crime Summary – July 23rd – 29th
There were several violent crimes and arrests in connection with homicides in the District this week. • Alphonso Roberts, 32, pleaded guilty last Friday to fatally shooting Maurico Walker, 23, of Northeast outside the Anacostia Library in February. • On Thursday, police arrested Divonta Gatling, 23, of Southeast DC, for the assault and second-degree murder of Desean Chapman, 28, in Forestville, Maryland. • Curtis Fowler, 21, of Southwest, was charged with assault on a police officer while armed. Police say an off-duty officer heard gunshots close to him near 16th Street Heights on Saturday night. • One man is in critical condition and another has been injured after a shooting in the area of Shaw Recreational Center near Logan Circle early Monday morning. • A man was shot and wounded late Monday in the NoMa neighborhood near one of the most violent street corners in the District. • A man was shot in the neck as he was sleeping in a vehicle early Thursday in Lower Central Northeast. He was transported to an area hospital. No suspect information is available at this time.

Washington Post: D.C. man arrested after shooting in Maryland “A District man was arrested Thursday after a shooting in Maryland earlier this week, police said. On Wednesday at about 6:30 a.m., officers were called to the 3200 block of Walters Lane in Forestville for the report of a shooting, Prince George’s County police said in a statement. The officers found the victim, 28-year-old Desean Chapman of Upper Marlboro, with a gunshot wound to the upper body, and Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.”
Washington Post: D.C. man pleads guilty to fatal shooting of man after car break-in “Alphonso Roberts, 32, pleaded guilty Friday to fatally shooting a man outside the Anacostia Library in Southeast Washington after his car was broken into, prosecutors said.”
WUSA9: Man arrested after 2 injured in officer-involved shoot in D.C. “A man was arrested after two people were injured in a shooting involving an off-duty officer in the District Saturday night. Authorities have charged 21-year-old Curtis Fowler of Southwest, D.C. with assault on a police officer while armed. Police say an off-duty officer heard gunshots close to him in the 5200 block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest around 7:48 p.m.”
WUSA9: 2 men shot overnight at Shaw Rec Center “One man is in critical condition and another has been injured after a shooting in the area of Shaw Recreational Center in Northwest, D.C. early Monday morning, Metropolitan police said. The shooting happened in the 1100 block of Q St. in Northwest, D.C. around 2:27 a.m., according to police.”
Washington Post: Man shot in neck while sleeping in vehicle in Northeast Washington “A man was shot in the neck as he was sleeping in a vehicle early Thursday in Northeast Washington. His condition was not immediately known. He was transported to an area hospital. The incident happened just after midnight on Edson Place near 42nd Street NE. The man told police he was sleeping in a vehicle when he heard gunshots. He then noticed he was hit in the lower side of his neck. When police arrived they found the vehicle’s driver side rear window had been shot. There was no description of a suspect or suspects.”
Washington Post: Man shot Monday night near notorious DC corner; man shot nearby earlier “A man was shot and wounded late Monday on North Capitol Street NW, near one of the most violent street corners in the city. The shooting was reported shortly before 11 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Capitol. The victim was conscious and breathing, said Officer Sean Hickman, a police spokesman. The site is no more than a block from North Capitol Street and New York Avenue, where four people were shot last month in front of a liquor store.”
WUSA9: 3 caught after robbing victims at gunpoint in D.C. “Three people were caught after robbing people of their personal possessions at gunpoint in the District on Thursday, police said. Around 6:30 p.m. police responded to the area of Florida Avenue in Northwest for a report of three suspects in a gold Ford Explorer robbing people at gunpoint as they exited an establishment. After robbing the victims, the suspects then fled the scene in the vehicle.”
WJLA: Prince George’s County Police create bonds with kids at life and leadership camp “For Corporal Nashawn Taylor, creating a bond with the kids in the Prince George’s County community is a huge priority.‘They look at us as humans in light of everything that is going on,’ she said. Cpl. Taylor works with the kids as a part of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s life and leadership camp. The one week camp runs twice each summer; some say, this year brings special meaning.”
WTOP: DC police officer wins award after rescue of injured dog “A local police officer says a little dog gave him a good run for his money Tuesday as he raced to rescue it after a fire. A fire in Northwest D.C. sent black smoke billowing through the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.”
WJLA: 3 firefighters injured fighting massive 2-alarm fire in downtown D.C. “Tuesday night a dozen D.C. residents were displaced after a fire tore through their three-story building. The fire started just before 4 p.m. on the 1300 block of 12th Street in Northwest Washington. Two firefighters had to be treated for heat-related injuries, and a third for a sprained ankle. A dog was burned during the fire and was treated, but ABC7 was not given another update on the dog’s condition.”
WJLA: Train derails at East Falls Church Metro, 75 passengers offloaded to platform “A train derailed at the East Falls Church Metro leading to 75 passengers being offloaded to the platform early Friday morning. Metro Transit Police say two cars are derailed, but are upright and in line. Officials are encouraging passengers to use alternative modes of transportation.”
