DC Crime Summary – August 6th – August 12th
There were 8 homicides and several other violent crimes this week in the District. • A man who was shot and critically wounded last Friday in 16th Street Heights has died. No suspect information is available at this time. • Matthew Walker, 26, was fatally shot at about 1:25 a.m. Sunday in the Burrville neighborhood. No suspect information is available at this time. • Marcus Martin, 19, of SW, and Marc Butler, 19, of Suitland, were charged with first-degree felony murder for the fatal shooting of Derryk Johnson, 19, in Shaw on Sunday. • Donald Stephen Johnson Jr., 45, was fatally shot on Monday night along the border of 16th Street Heights and Brightwood Park. The suspect has been identified as Herman Lee Cook, Jr., 45. Police consider Cook armed and dangerous. • A man was shot and killed Tuesday evening in the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood. Police are looking for a black auto with Virginia tags. • George Joyner, 50, was charged with second-degree murder while armed for stabbing a man Monday night near a homeless shelter several blocks from Judiciary Square. • A man was fatally stabbed near the Children’s National Medical Center in Edgewood on Wednesday afternoon. Police believe his adult son is responsible. • In a separate incident, Peter Spencer, 32, was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his father, Harrison Spencer, 71, in Georgetown on Wednesday. • A transgender woman was stabbed multiple times near the Ivy City neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. The woman was conscious and breathing. This is the second violent crime against a transgender person in Northeast, D.C. this past month.

Washington Post: D.C. police identify man fatally shot in Eastern Avenue “D.C. police have identified a man who was shot and killed early Sunday in Northeast Washington as a 26-year-old, according to a statement from the department. Police said Matthew Walker was killed about 1:25 a.m. in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue NE, along the border with Maryland. Police said Walker was pronounced dead on the scene.”
Washington Post: Man is killed near Georgia Avenue in Northwest Washington “A man who was shot several times Monday night in a parking lot behind a recreation center on Georgia Avenue in Northwest Washington has died of his injuries, according to D.C. police. The victim, identified as Donald Stephen Johnson Jr., 45, was wounded about 7:10 p.m. in the 5700 block of Georgia Avenue NW, along the border of 16th Street Heights and Brightwood Park.”
Washington Post: Man slain Tuesday night in Northeast Washington “A man was shot and killed Tuesday evening in Northeast Washington, the D.C. police said. The shooting was reported about 7:20 p.m. in the 4500 block of Quarles Street., police said. The site is in the Kenilworth -Parkside neighborhood, between the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, and Kenilworth Avenue. Police said they were looking for a black auto with Virginia tags.”
NBC Washington: Transgender woman stabbed, injured in Northeast DC “A transgender woman was stabbed multiple times in Northeast, D.C. Tuesday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Police received reports of a stabbing on the 1500 block of West Virginia Avenue in Northeast Washington about 12:05 p.m. The woman was conscious and breathing, police said. Investigators have not released any information about the attacker. This is the second violent crime against a transgender person in Northeast, D.C. this past month.”
WJLA: 19-year-old man charged with murder in fatal Northwest shooting “A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of another 19-year-old man in Northwest, the Metropolitan Police Department reports. Police say they received reports of a double shooting on Aug. 3 in the 600 block of N St. NW. When they arrived Derryk Johnson and another man were suffering from gunshot wounds. The other victim and Johnson were transported to the hospital where he later died. According to police, the second man was listed in stable condition. On Sunday, police arrested Marcus Martin and charged him with First Degree Felony Murder.”
Washington Post: Three wounded in noontime shooting Sunday in Northeast“Three people were wounded in a noontime shooting in Northeast Sunday, police said. The victims were a woman and two men. Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown said the shooting occurred just after noon in the 500 block of M Street Northeast, near the intersection of 5th street and Florida Avenue. Brown said the three victims were conscious and breathing. A suspect had yet to be identified by early afternoon.”
WUSA9: Woman shot in leg in NE DC “A woman was shot in the leg in Northeast, D.C. Sunday afternoon, according to D.C. police.The shooting happened at 51st and Cloud Place. Police have not released any suspect information. No further information has been released at this time.”
Washington Post: Man fatally stabbed in Northwest Washington "A man was fatally stabbed Monday night near a homeless shelter several blocks from Judiciary Square during a fight that police said started when one man bumped the other, according to an arrest affidavit filed in court. Police said the victim, who was not identified because his relatives had not been notified, was stabbed in the abdomen with a razor blade about 7:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Second Street NW, near the Gewirz Student Center for the Georgetown University Law Center, the D.C. Central Kitchen and the Unity Health Care Homeless Shelter.”
WTOP: 1 dead after midday stabbing near DC hospital “A man was fatally stabbed near a D.C. hospital on Wednesday afternoon and police believe his adult son is responsible. The unnamed man was stabbed about 3 p.m. in the 100 block of Michigan Avenue near Children’s National Medical Center, according to D.C. police. Police said the man was unconscious and died after he was taken to the hospital. Officers are looking for his son, who was seen carrying a green shirt in the area of the children’s hospital and the Veterans Affairs buildings on Michigan Avenue.”
WTOP: Man arrested for stabbing death in Georgetown “A 32-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder in a stabbing death in Georgetown Wednesday. On Wednesday, D.C. police arrested Peter Spencer for allegedly killing Harrison Spencer, 71. Police arrived in the 1600 block of 33rd Street Northwest Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and found Harrison suffering from stab wounds and showing no signs of life. Police sources told NBC Washington that the suspect is the son of the homeowner. They arrested Peter, who lived at the residence with his parents, NBC Washington reports.”
Washington Post: Man shot last week on Georgia Avenue has died “A man who was shot and critically wounded last Friday in Northwest Washington has died, according to D.C. police. The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of relatives. Police said he died at an area hospital on Wednesday, five days after he was wounded in the 5100 block of Georgia Avenue NW, in 16th Street Heights. The shooting occurred about 6:40 p.m.”
WJLA: Police searching for critically missing 73-year-old woman “Police are looking for Yvonne Little, 73, of Southeast D.C., who has been critically missing since Tuesday. According to D.C. Police, Little was last seen in the 1800 block of Burke Street SE at around 4:55 p.m. Police say she could need medical care.”
WJLA: Police ask for the public’s help in locating missing 12-year-old DC boy “D.C. Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a critically missing 12-year-old boy. Twelve-year-old Elijah Howard was last seen on Thursday around 12 p.m. in the 3300 block of D Street, SE, according to police.”

Council member Vincent Orange (D-At Large) announced he would be resigning his seat, responding to criticism over his decision to accept a position heading the D.C. Chamber of Commerce. The fact that Orange even contemplated holding both jobs at once is a problem, Lowery says. Though it would’ve been legal — and Orange would have only been on the Council through January, anyway — Lowery says the situation laid bare the influence of big money on D.C. politics.”
Washington Post: Woman killed in collision with Metrobus in Southeast is identified “A woman killed when her car slammed into the back of a Metrobus in Southeast Washington has been identified as a Bowie, Md., resident, D.C. police said on Thursday. Debra Finley, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of Naylor Road SE. Eight people on-board the Metrobus were transported with minor injuries.”
WJLA: FTA cites ‘significant safety concerns,’ requires Metro to correct track deficiencies “The Federal Transit Administration issued a Safety Directive Monday, requiring WMATA to correct track integrity deficiencies by completing 12 actions on the Metro system. The FTA investigation began after a major track derailment in August 2015 near the Smithsonian Station and included other incidents in the system, according to a statement from the FTA. The investigation focused on 10 specific track segments, and covered all six Metrorail lines. It also includes preliminary findings from the derailment 10 days ago near the East Falls Church Station.”
WUSA9: Metro safety plan may be extended “On the heels of the scathing federal review, Metro can now start expanding its nine-month maintenance blitz. In a surprise press conference Wednesday, Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said new weekend shutdowns are coming as Metro scrambles to fix rail cross-overs. Problems with cross-overs, also known as interlockings, are detailed in the new report by the Federal Transit Administration.”
