Good Morning Neighbors,
At tomorrow’s DC Council Legislative Meeting, Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd will introduce the Extreme Weather Protection for Animals Emergency Amendment Act of 2017, also known as ‘Momma’s Law.’ The emergency legislation, which would fill critical gaps in the District’s animal welfare laws and protect dogs from exposure to extreme cold, will be put to an immediate vote. It is intended to institute the necessary protections for the remainder of the winter, until permanent legislation can be enacted. We encourage any and all residents who feel strongly about this bill to attend the meeting and show their support. It will take place in Room 500 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW. The Legislative Meeting starts at 10:00 am, but it is likely that this measure will not come up for a vote until closer to 11:30.
Later in the day, Councilmember Todd will hold a press conference on the bill at the Humane Rescue Alliance, 71 Oglethorpe St NW, at 2:30 pm. Residents are encouraged to attend, but asked to please not bring their dogs due to space limitations.
